Mental Health Concerns

Possible physical late effects after cancer treatment are varied and very much dependent on your diagnosis and specific treatment you have received. The term Late Effects also includes mental health issues that are as a result of your diagnosis and or treatment, please see below for more information:

Cancer doesn’t just affect your body – it affects your mind, thoughts, emotions and relationships. Living beyond cancer doesn’t necessarily make coping with cancer and the effect on your life any easier. Cancer can have long lasting mental health implications, so accessing the right support as soon as you feel able, will help you to manage how you’re feeling.

Mental health concerns following cancer can involve any of the following issues:

  • General worry & anxiety
  • Health anxiety
  • Fear of recurrence
  • Stress
  • Overthinking
  • Avoidance
  • Uncertainty
  • Anger / Frustration
  • Mood Swings
  • Lack of interest in activities
  • Unable to express feelings
  • Hopelessness
  • OCD thoughts / behaviours
  • Low mood / depression
  • Feeling sad
  • Being emotional
  • Concerns about appearance / body image
  • Loneliness / Isolation
  • Feeling guilty
  • Lack on independence
  • Reliance on smoking / alcohol / substance mis-use
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Self harm
