Sun protection

Children have thinner skin than adults and are more sensitive to the sun. The effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy can also make your child’s skin more sensitive to the sun and therefore more prone to sunburn.

How to protect your child from the effects of the sun

  • Keep your child covered with a T-shirt and wide brimmed hat (even when his/her hair has grown back)
  • Always use protective sun block with a high factor and reapply frequently
  • Choose long lasting and water resistant products if your child plays in or near water
  • Apply sun block even in the shade or on a cloudy day
  • Encourage your child to wear sunglasses

Remember:

Slip on a T-shirt

Slop on some sun cream

Slap on a hat

Wrap around sunglasses

Take a look inside our Principal Treatment Centres

These short videos introduce you to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and Leicester Royal Infirmary.

You’ll get a feel for the spaces, the facilities, and meet some of the caring staff who are there to support children, young people, and families every step of the way.
