Royal Derby Hospital is a TYA Designated Hospital in the East Midlands, offering diagnostic and treatment facilities for TYA patients from the age of 19 to 24 years of age.

Patients in this age group are offered the option of receiving treatment locally or at the Primary Treatment Centre (PTC). All patients aged 13-18 years inclusive will be referred to the PTC for both inpatient and outpatient treatment and whenever possible for initial investigation.

About the Unit

At Derby Hospital there are 2 outpatient areas that you may attend, they are the specialist outpatient department or Combined Day Unit. All patients with a Haematological/Oncological malignancy are reviewed in these areas. Outpatient treatment such as chemotherapy is administered in the Combined Day Unit. There are 3 bays dedicated to administering treatments and 2 side rooms, you will have the choice of which area you prefer to have your treatment.

About the ward

We have a designated ward, Ward 302 that is located on the third floor, although known as the “Haematology Ward” it is also where patients with an oncological malignancy would be treated as an inpatient (where you need to stay overnight for your treatment) we try to accommodate Teenage and Young Adults in a room with a TV, Play Station games and DVD’s. This equipment was kindly donated by the Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund.

All patients that receive a cancer diagnosis will be allocated a Specialist Nurse (Key Worker) usually the tumour site clinical nurse specialist who can provide information about your diagnosis and treatment. You will have the opportunity to talk about the choices you have, for example if you wish to be treated at the Designated Hospital (Derby) or a Primary Treatment Centre (usually Nottingham) and discuss potential effects of any treatment. The Specialist Nurse can act as a link between the different people involved in your care and support you through the different stages of your treatment/journey.

Patients who are undergoing treatment at Derby have given positive feedback about the service offered; any concerns relating to patient experience are addressed immediately. We are a dedicated team at Derby and listen to all concerns, ideas or feedback in order to provide a patient focused service.
