Northampton General Hospital is a TYA Designated Hospital in the East Midlands, offering diagnostic and treatment facilities for TYA patients from the age of 19 to 24 years of age.

Patients in this age group are offered the option of receiving treatment locally or at the PTC.  All patients aged 13-18 years inclusive will be referred to the PTC for both inpatient and outpatient treatment and whenever possible for initial investigation.

About the Unit

The Macmillan Haematology Outpatients Department at Northampton General Hospital is located along Hospital Street and provides care and treatment for patients with Haematological disorders. The Macmillan Haematology Outpatient area is newly refurbished unit, offering patients a separate area to receive their treatment.

Privacy and dignity is maintained at all times with the use of screens and a separate room. The Outpatients area is designated for Haematology patients that are receiving short treatments and who do not require an overnight stay in hospital. While you are receiving your treatment patients sometimes like to have a visitor with them, this can be arranged with the Outpatient nurses.

About the ward

At Northampton we have a designated ward that is located nearby Haematology Outpatients Department. Teenage Cancer Trust have provided a TYA age appropriate space, which has been created in a side room on Talbot Butler Ward. This room has been designed for use by TYA patients staying as an in-patient at Northampton General Hospital.

Support

All patients that receive a cancer diagnosis will be allocated a Specialist Nurse (Key Worker) who can provide information about your diagnosis and treatment. You will have the opportunity to talk about choices you have, and discuss potential effects of any treatment. The Specialist Nurse can act as a link between the different people involved in your care and support you through the different stages of your treatment.

In Northampton we offer an excellent fertility service which is provided by Northampton Care Fertility, your Specialist Nurse can refer you to this service for egg or sperm banking. This service is funded by the Clinical Commissioning Group.

Patients who are undergoing treatment at Northampton have given positive feedback about the service offered; any concerns relating to patient experience are addressed immediately. We are a dedicated team at Northampton and we are happy to listen to any concerns, ideas or feedback in order to provide a patient focused service.

Here at Northampton we offer complementary therapy, complementary therapy can be described as alternative or holistic medicine. Therapies include Reiki, which is offered at the hospital in the Information Centre in Oncology. The other therapies that are available are reflexology and massage these can be provided at the Dunstone Bennett Suite in Northampton Town Centre. The Dunstone Bennett Suite is a complement therapy centre which is support by Macmillan Cancer Support and they can support patients and their relatives.
